What Plungie Owners Say

4.1 ★ from 77 Google reviews

★★★★★

“Our plungie has been an amazing pool for our three young boys to learn how to swim. The customer service is also amazing - we had a minor issue with our internal light and the plungie team sent someone to fix the light within days and reimbursed us for all costs associated with re-filling the pool. Would definitely recommend”

Why Precast Concrete for Your In-Ground Pool?

There are two ways to build a concrete in-ground pool in Australia. Traditional shotcrete pools are built on-site by hand, one pool at a time, over 8 to 16 weeks. Precast concrete pools like Plungie's are manufactured in a factory and delivered as a finished shell ready to install in 14 days. Both are concrete. The difference is how they're built.

1. Installed in 14 Days Rather Than Months

A traditional shotcrete pool build takes 8 to 16 weeks on-site, weather permitting. A Plungie installation runs around 14 days from site preparation to swimming, which is over 74% faster. That difference matters for home renovations where the pool build blocks other trades, for developer timelines, and for anyone who wants to actually use the pool this summer rather than next.

2. Factory-Controlled Quality

Every Plungie shell is manufactured under controlled factory conditions in Brisbane. Steel reinforcement placement, concrete mix, curing environment, and interior finish application are all quality-controlled at the manufacturing stage. Traditional shotcrete pools are built on-site in whatever weather conditions happen to exist on pour day, which introduces variables that a factory build removes.

3. 61% Lower Carbon Footprint

An independent life cycle assessment prepared by Pangolin Associates in September 2023 verified that a Plungie Max has a 61% lower carbon footprint than a traditional concrete pool. For architects and developers specifying to Green Star or sustainability rating requirements, the emissions difference is significant.

4. Predictable Scope, Fewer Surprises

Custom shotcrete pools are shaped on-site, so changed scope, ground conditions, and weather delays can stretch the project out. A Plungie shell is pre-engineered and manufactured to a set specification, so you know exactly what's arriving before excavation starts. Site works like excavation, crane, freight, and cladding are scoped upfront, so there are fewer surprises along the way.

5. Less Site Disruption

A traditional pool build brings multiple trades to your property over weeks or months. Excavators, steel fixers, shotcrete crews, plasterers, tilers, plumbers, and electricians all pass through in sequence. A Plungie install involves fewer trades over a much shorter timeframe. Less mess, less noise, less disruption to your household.

6. Award-Winning Monolithic Design

Plungie's patented monolithic shell design provides maximum strength at the lightest possible weight, which makes the delivery and crane placement practical on a wider range of Australian sites. The design has won multiple industry awards and is backed by a 10-year structural warranty.

Design and Finishing Options

The Plungie shell is precast concrete. Everything above ground level is a design choice, and in-ground installation opens up finishing options that above-ground installs don't allow.

  1. Coping: The edge treatment where the pool wall meets the surrounding surface. Bluestone, travertine, honed concrete, timber, and porcelain paver options all work. Coping is where the pool meets your landscape, and it's the detail people notice most.
  2. Waterline Tile: A tiled band above the ecoFinish interior at the waterline creates a two-tone look and hides the equilibrium line where the water level sits. Mosaic tile, subway tile, and large-format porcelain are all popular options for waterline detail on in-ground Plungies.
  3. Surrounding Decking: Timber deck, natural stone paving, exposed aggregate concrete, porcelain paver systems, and integrated turf all work as pool surrounds. The choice depends on your outdoor living plan and the aesthetic of your home.
  4. Interior Finish: Every in-ground Plungie comes with a choice of six ecoFinish interior colours: Kona Coast, Sahara Sand, Blue Lagoon, Mediterranean Blue, Grey Reef, and French Grey. The interior finish is factory-applied for consistency and longevity.
  5. Water Features: Spillways, sheer descents, laminar jets, and bubblers can all be integrated into an in-ground Plungie during the installation stage.
  6. Lighting: LED pool lighting, including single-colour, colour-changing, and smart-controlled options, can be built in at installation.

How In-Ground Installation Works

In-ground installation runs around 14 days from site preparation to swimming, over 74% faster than a traditional pool build.

Step 1: Site Preparation and Excavation

The pool footprint is excavated to accommodate the pool shell plus additional depth and width for the base pad, backfill, and plumbing runs. A reinforced base pad is then poured and cured to support the pool shell.

Step 2: Delivery and Crane Placement

The finished pool shell is delivered from the Brisbane manufacturing facility by semi-trailer, then craned into the excavation onto the prepared base. This typically happens in a single day.

Step 3: Plumbing, Backfill, and Equipment

Filtration, pumps, heating, and any add-ons like swim jets are connected. The shell is backfilled around the sides with approved backfill material, and the hydrostatic valve is installed to manage groundwater pressure. Every in-ground pool in Australia requires a hydrostatic valve regardless of construction type.

Step 4: Coping, Decking, and Pool Fencing

The coping, surrounding decking, and any landscape integration are built out to your finished ground level. Pool fencing that meets your state's compliance requirements is installed to complete the project.

Site Requirements and Council Approval for In-Ground Pools

Not every Australian block suits every pool type. In-ground installation has specific site requirements worth checking before you commit to a build.

Site Access

The pool shell arrives by semi-trailer and needs to be craned into position. That means clear access for a semi-trailer to get within crane reach of your site, and enough clearance overhead and around the pool location for a crane to swing the shell into place. Tight urban sites can still work but often need a larger crane, which increases cost.

Soil Conditions

South East Queensland's reactive black soils, Sydney sandstone, and rocky blocks across the Adelaide Hills all affect excavation cost and complexity. Reactive soils need engineered backfill. Sandy coastal sites need careful drainage design. Every site is different, and a preliminary geotechnical assessment is worth doing before excavation begins.

Small, Sloping, and Tight Blocks

A compact or sloping block doesn't rule out an in-ground pool. The Orb, Quad, and Studio suit smaller footprints, and a semi-recessed install can work well on a slope. For more ideas, see our guides to small pools for small backyards, partial in-ground pools, and the best pools for small and sloping blocks.

Water Table and Hydrostatic Valve

Every in-ground pool in Australia requires a hydrostatic valve regardless of construction type. The valve relieves groundwater pressure on the pool shell after heavy rainfall, which prevents the shell from being pushed out of the ground. Coastal blocks and sites with high water tables need particular attention to this during installation.

Council Approval

Every state requires council approval for in-ground pool installation. Fees and certifier requirements vary by state and council, so it's worth checking with yours early. Plungie provides pre-engineered specifications and preliminary engineering drawings that simplify the approval process for both homeowners and builders.

Pool Fencing

Australian pool safety regulations require compliant pool fencing for any pool capable of holding water 300mm or deeper. Standard requirements include a minimum 1.2 metre fence height, self-closing and self-latching gates, and a 900mm non-climbable zone. State-by-state requirements vary slightly.
